Even though the email is based on the last close approach of Mars, the next close approach will be this year beginning Oct 27 when mars will be .464 AU from Earth. It will be visible beginning in the Eastern Sky at about 7pm. It should be prominant at just about any time through the night. It will be over head at about 1am (Central) on Oct 28.
In fact it is quite visible now during the night and will only grow brighter. As I write this (3am CT) it is almost overhead.
Yeah, I think last summer was the closest it will be in... my lifetime. I remember George reading the email and saying "wasn't last summer the closest?"

Yeah, Mars is already pretty bright. Need to get my telescope back up on the roof.
