Why is the rum always gone?
I skipped c2c last night. I tuned in the first hour and only to find Dames on, I was in too good of a mood to listen to his ravings about doom and gloom that never come true anyway. So instead, I popped Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest in the DVD. I purchased it last tuesday when it came out, so it was amazing that I waited this long to watch it. It wasn't as though I didn't see it at the movie theater and I will admit the giant screen is always better for such movies, but still I am surprised that I managed to wait until Friday to watch it. What is it about pirates that makes them so irresistible? I find Depp pretty irresistible no matter what, but there is something that seems to draw people to pirates, no matter what kind of person they are. I think we romanticize something that probably wasn't at all romantic, sailing beautiful seas in a huge ship, in search of treasure and adventure. In reality, most of it was incredibly boring, with a huge chance of dying of something mundane, like scurvy or just the flu and there was rarely a huge pay off at the end. Yeah, I like the romantic version better.

I didn't care for either of the POTC, although Johnny Depp is always watchable. A lesbian friend of mine calls his character a "swishbuckler."
I am not sure what a swishbuckler is, but he can swish my buckle any time.:-)
I'm a Depp fan as well, and completely enjoyed both films. They're fun and silly and great escapist movies. Why not? I agree with you Lesley, that the reality of pirates vs. the romantic film fun are two very different things. Since we all know that, we can just sit back and relax and have a lot of fun with these movies. I've seen both more than once, lol.
