I think this appointment is far more important than is generally realized for two reasons that I subsequently learned. There is a purge going on in the military where all high ranking commanders who don't clap loud enough are resigning or being canned. Also there's puzzlement why they'd bring in an admiral to be in charge of a land war. I think the answer is any attack on Iran would be from ships.
