I think the key to distinguishing between a contrail and a possible chemtrail would be the distance that the trail appears behind the plane. Jet exhaust is very hot and this is why a contrail doesn't appear until the gases have had the chance to cool, allowing any water to condense, often this is some 40ft behind the engine. A chemtrail would appear almost immediatedly, similar in style to ectoplasm seen at lower altitudes. I need to see some close pics of chemtrails being discharged, so I can see exactly at which point the trails emerge.

There have been times here where they just seem to appear and I can't see any sign of a plane in the sky making them. Most times when I do see a plane it is too high in the sky to get any close up pics of.

If you have a radio scanner there is a system called 'WASCAR'. It is purely a data transeiver operated by individual aircraft (including military) to exchange information with ground control, (wheels up, landing lights on etc) the signal is weak, but this is the key. If there is a plane above you then the signal is still strong because of free air, as it moves away it quickly weakens. The signal also transmits elevation so you tie a sighting up to one particular plane, each one broadcasting its own identity. This only works in commercial airspace, outside that, military traffic of course falls 'silent'.
