Anyone know what I photographed?

It wasn't a UFO. I say that because it wasn't flying as far as I could tell. It was a bright light hanging stationary in the western sky. I first noticed it at 5:25 pm on September 13th, that is when I took the first photo. The last photo was taken at 5:44 pm and eventually sometime after 6 pm it disappeared from my view behind the mountain. In most of the photos it looks like a ball of light, but it didn't seem ball shaped to me. It was more triangle shaped being large at the top and small at the bottom. It was very bright! When I first saw it I thought it was a little cloud puff being lit up by the sun, but unlike the clouds it never drifted off. Was it Venus or some other planet or star? So far I haven't had any luck finding any information on anything that was suppose to be bright and visible in the sky at that time, but maybe I haven't checked the right place. More and larger photos in my flickr album.

It might be Venus. It is often referred to as the 'Evening star', but sometimes it is visible in the morning and is referred to as the'Morning star'! ( I think its orbit is 600 days or something). The triangular effect could be that it is as a cresent at the moment, it waxes and wanes as the moon. Also it appears low in the sky and so gets distorted by the atmoshpere. Its bearing coincides with our local airport, it tends to twinkle in the twilight and I regularly mistake it for an aircraft, wondering why it is in one place for so long. You can sometimes see it in the daytime during the summer, it's fooled me many a time. Every so often it for some reason looks super bright, and it is hard to believe it is a planet so very far away. Well, I hope my observations help you reach a conclusion but I know no more than you. I'll go out next evening and see if I can spot anything. Let us know if you find out anymore....

I did think about it being Venus, but normally Venus looks like it is twinkling and this was a steady light. I have checked the sky since then on Friday and Saturday and there was nothing like that in the sky at any time. So I am still clueless as to what it was.

Lesley - It's a weather balloon. Really. A HUGE weather balloon. Ft Sumner sends those out. It caused a bit of havoc here at the VLA where I work. They also had a report about it on the news.
