Oscar night! Even I am enchanted with Hollywood every now and then. I love the Oscars because I love seeing what the ladies are wearing. Nothing very interesting this year, or at least not anything I looked at and said WOW! Pretty much the same. Lovely dresses, but nothing very unique or totally stunning.
I haven't seen No Country for Old Men yet. Frankly, I am not even sure what it is about. I did however love that shot of Albuquerque in the clip right before it won the Oscar. How many times have I driven that exact route they show? Probably at least thousands of times. Straight down Central Ave (old route 66) from east to west. That was the lifeline of my youth, Albuquerque wasn't as big then and that was without a doubt the main road and everywhere I went was on that road.
It is still where the hookers and pimps hang. Still full of adult theaters and cheap motels. I like it that way because that is how it has always been.
Now when I was young there was a drive in movie theater called The Terrace on Central Ave. You could see whatever was playing there from the front yard of my house and you could also see the sign, a screen sized neon image of a woman in a ball gown dancing. Still to this day I have not forgiven them for turning that into a trailer park. It was totally magical when I was a kid.
I have never really understood the abandonment of drive ins. I think they were fabulous places. You could see a movie and bring you own food and beverages. You could have a cooler full of beer and fried chicken -- whatever you want. You could smoke during the movie and you could even talk if you were bored by it. If you were of a certain younger age, you might go there with your boyfriend with hopes to steam up the windows. I went to see movies at the drive in up until the bitter end. There are none left here now and that makes me sad. It is one of those few things about "modern times" that I just don't understand.

Have you seen a show on AMC called "Breaking Bad"? It's filmed and takes place in Albuquerque. It's a dark comedy/drama. The creator is Vince Gilligan who used to write for "The X-Files".
No, I hadn't even heard of it. I will have to check that out. Thanks for the heads up!
Drive ins were too communal, couldn't have that when there were so many TV sets and VCRs to sell.
The last time I went to one of those was around 1980 in Driggs, Idaho at the Spud Drive in, which is actually still in business. My fire crew was taking a break for a couple of days.
Maybe you are right. I remember sitting in lawn chairs with a bunch of friends in the back of a pick up, we had a cooler full of beer and were having a great time with the cars around us even though we didn't know them. We were all talking and sharing beer, pot and whatever else. That was around 1983, back in the good old days.
Yeah, the speakers and sound sucked, but that wasn't why you went to the drive in.
