Sadly, Maypole dancing has died out in my local town. My school had a metal mounting hole in which to fit the Maypole but it had stopped being used 10 years previously. There are a couple of metal mount holes still visible in Sutton Park but I have not seen them used for a few years now.
We still often call flowering Hawthorn 'May blossom' even though with the increasingly mild winters it's usually in bloom in April or as early as March.
It used to be a big thing to celebrate the end of winter as they were quite severe, tough times.
