I'm betting they find a prosaic source. They _can't_ find off-planet intelligence in space. See, their whole function is to keep the concept of "alien" entirely in theory and so at arm's length. Actually finding one only feeds the suspicion that the alien is in fact already here, too, eh?

Aside from that -- their small little world would never let them admit to finding anything truly alien. Even if they found something they couldn't explain any other way -- they would come up with something, hedgehogs mating in space or something equally as silly. I think a lot of them actually convince themselves of these wild theories because they are afraid of the truth. As Jack would say -- they can't handle the truth.

We are not alone, just look up through a telescope. There are just so many stars.
Soon they will be able to detect aliens on distance planets, watchout!
