The only thing strange is the anomalous humility of this person in an age of celebrity cults who worship suicidal tendencies. The author correlates this resistance to fame as an inference that the space program is a hoax? This person professes indifference to whether or not he landed on the moon, yet out of the other corner comes a conclusion discounting his sincerity? Ugh...Kool Aid by any other name would taste as sweet.
I was not suggesting that the space program was a hoax -- I don't believe that. Although, I was thinking it is possible that he holds a grudge against NASA for other reasons. I certainly wouldn't blame him for that given what I have read about how NASA treated those men -- seeming to want control over every aspect of their lives.
I think the man detests everything associated with fame but that is only a guess. From what Ive read, the idea that the landing was a hoax, he understandably takes that theory very personally, while not "cashing in" on his historic role on the other hand. In some sense he is the opposite of John Glenn, who sought a continuing public role, while he is a very private person. In this day and age, this short essay the link led to either intentionally or unintentionally suggested that the whole NASA attempt at human space exploration was "bullshit", infers that the death of Gus Grissom and all the others, the Apollo 13 near casualties, etc were also bullshit, which any reasonable person would say, jumps the shark. NASA was and is controlling, but if he bears a grudge, he never, to my knowledge ever expressed such a view.Perhaps he thinks the whole anniversary hoopla is a three ring circus, and he refuses to be a trained seal, who knows?
Yes, I believe I did link to a post that suggests that possibility. I just wanted to make clear that is not my opinion. There are always links here that I don't fully agree with or don't agree with at all.
