I don't get what the big deal is. SETI is considered to be science and is funded by the government, so this person was using school computers for science research. What is wrong with that?

In the fall, police recovered 18 district computers from his home that he had stolen so this investigation has been going on for quite some time. I imagine the SETI thing was discovered after the district hired someone else to take a looksee at their computers and the kind of job that the employee had been doing.
Well, stealing is a totally different matter. They make it sound like his crime was doing UFO research. :)
