We saw Avatar in 3-D last night and although the story was so predictable as to almost be boring, it was made up for by the overall beauty of the film. The story was pretty much what I had heard - Dances with Wolves in space. Not to say that is a bad storyline because it isn't, it is just very predictable. As many of you know, I love 3-D movies! However, it was really the colors (or coloring) in this that made it so beautiful, at least to me. I honestly think it could be seen in 2-d and although it would be lacking compared to 3-d, it would still be a really beautiful film.

No criticism, L., but many are dismissing Avatar with comparisons to Dances With Wolves. For myself, I absolutely loved DWW and reminded again vis a vis Avatar about the morality and sensibility of "going native" given an egregious alternative, eh?
I don't dismiss it and as I said DWW isn't a bad storyline, just predictable. There was nothing really wrong with the story except that I knew what would happen before it did happen. The one exception was when the animals joined the fight, I didn't see that coming and I loved it!
Also, I forget to mention, but a speaker (or something) went out for about the last 15 minutes of the film. You could hear everything except what the characters were saying. It was very strange and we ended up with two free tickets for a future movie. Anyhow, I couldn't hear any of what was said during that time, not sure if I missed anything that couldn't be assumed from the visual.
Initially I was not going to see this film, but was bored one evening, so I went.
I ended up liking it very much. I was a little put off by the name 'Unobtanium'. Seemed like a cheap attempt at humor.
It reminded me of DWW too, also Braveheart, Last of the Mohican's, a Light in the Forest, etc.
The tree reminded me of the Tree of Life, bringing in a bit of Celtic mythologies/tribal culture as well (though the tree is certainly not exclusive to the Celts). While much of the 'native' aspect of the film seemed (to me) to lean more towards the native american story, there were a lot of influences from other tribal peoples, the world over.
The film was visually stunning - although, people kept saying it looked so real - still looks cgi to me, but thats probably because I'm a graphics person and I look too hard at stuff. It's better than most I've seen, but the eyes are always a distraction and there is something about the textures that usually trigger me.
And I cried like a baby at the end when she was holding his human form in her arms. What can I say?
I don't think it looked real and I think if it had looked real it wouldn't have been so beautiful. :)
Probably not. Who wants to see pimples on aliens, anyway?
