Warning Cheaters

OK, so I don't want to accuse anyone - maybe this person just has a lot of friends, but there is a certain person/site in the Zorgies that I know isn't very popular that is winning in a certain category. Not being popular is aside from the fact that for the first 24 hours or so, this person had no votes and now suddenly they are in the #1 spot. Very odd seeming, but I assume that Paul Kimball could check his stats if he wanted and find out if anyone was cheating. I am not saying they are (as I said, they might just have a lot of friends). I have tried to cheat several times, not to actually cheat, but just to test and see if I could, trying various things and I couldn't. Still, I have heard many rumors that you can - though I won't say how and I did not have access to that particular way to cheat - I will only say that Paul Kimball seems to have stat counter and so quite likely he can tell who has clicked on what. I say that not because I am certain anyone is cheating, as I said, maybe they just have a lot of friends, but also to discourage those that might think of cheating - because I know Paul has stat counter which tells what people visit and what they click on. I ask that people not cheat, not even if it is for me - I am happy to be nominated and with whatever I end up with and I would like it to be REAL. I do not need false "zorgy popularity" and neither does anyone else, except possibly for this person that is possibly cheating.

Lesley,

I have set the polls so that a person can only vote once, at least on their computer. Beyond that, it someone wanted to use a bunch of different computers to vote more than once, I guess they could, but to what end? I mean, seriously, that would be pathologically pathetic. :-)

Perhaps whomever you are talking about has more friends than you think.

Anyway, I have seen no sign of cheating in what is, after all, just a fun little poll with a stuffed duck as the front person.

Of course, you could always do what Jeremy Vaeni does - beg people to vote for you at the same time as you say the whole thing isn't terribly important. ;-)

As I said - possibly that person has a lot of friends. However, I still have people telling me you can cheat using certain ways (email me if you want to know) and so I felt I should warn against cheating. Myself - I would never want votes from cheating. I know I won't beat TDG or the anomalist and I am OK with that.

Statcounter does indeed allow me to keep an eye on things, and see whose logged in, and how many times, and so forth, but that's far too much effort for me. Life is too short to spend it checking up on a fun little internet poll about paranormal podcasts and such to see if someone might be cheating. If there's a way to cheat, and someone wants to do it, then all I can say is for them to go ahead and do it if it makes them feel better about themselves somehow. :-)

Indeed, you are likely right. If anyone has that low of self esteem that they have to cheat to win (anythng) - let them. Apparently they need it. I am mostly reminding folks not to do it on my behalf. Which I also did a year or couple years back when I felt that someone might be cheating for me.

That is not to say that I think anyone is cheating for me now - but please don't.

Well, I voted fair and square for your blog, Lesley. I see The Anomalist is ahead, but I think it's just not as good as it once was. But that's just me.

Looking at the results for all the Zorgy categories was pretty surprising, probably because as a biology major I find cryptozoology the least credible of all paranormal subjects though it polls well. But, again, that's just me.

Good luck on the voting.

Thanks Purrlgurrl!

The Anomalist and TDG will be way ahead of me once they announce the Zorgies on their sites.

I'm sorry but this is yet another reason why I don't like these kinds of contests. I think a diverse panel of judges would be better than a popularity contest. Not saying the person in question is cheating, but still.

BTW, I voted for you. Good luck!

Thanks for the vote Andrea!
