The only good that can possibly come from this horrific event (clinging desperately to this hope) is that Americans and the rest of the world are finally shocked and outraged enough to rouse from their complacent stupor and truly commit to the discovery, development, and use of alternative energy sources.
Unfortunately, maybe nothing short of a continental-sized ecological disaster was ever going to do that.
