Chupacabras, just like alien abductions, are myths (or memes) developed from two widely-reported events, the Tolentino case and the Betty & Barney Hill case (both of which might or might not be accurate interpretations of real events). All subsequent stories contain elements from these cases, with further embellishments based on other accounts following the original cases.

Myths that used to be told and re-told in flickering fire light, are now told and re-told on the Internet, in films, television, books, and magazines. Read Joseph Campbell to understand the enormous power myths hold in cultures and societies. They operate at a very deep subconscious level, and they color how we see the world and interpret the things that happen to us without us being directly aware of their compelling influence.

In fact, I had a frightening dream in which aliens embedded an implant under my skin to track and control me. It was extremely vivid and I wasn’t sure it was really a dream. It stayed with me for years and I even wrote it all down. Then, about two years ago, I re-watched a movie released not long before I had that dream. I was surprised to see the elements in my implant dream closely tracked the storyline and visuals of the movie. I’d completely forgotten about seeing the movie when interpreting my dream. I’m now sure the genesis of the dream was a movie based on alien abduction mythology not a real abduction experience.
