I remember that quite well, as I was living up there and happened to catch the initial news blurb on TV. The next day somebody went in and wiped it away, and the manipulators trotted out an early version of Doug and Dave, actually filming a couple of stooges fumbling with ropes and a sort of plow thing. The desert can be seen from the top of Steens Mountain, a truly awesome and massive uplift in the wilds of eastern Oregon. It was one of my favorite places.
