Hey, times are tough for everbody who isn't a Wall Street banker or US corporate executive.
I don't think the cause of finding extraterrestrial life has been dealt a set back. SETI is unsuccessful because its research premise is flawed, being based on mid-20th century terrestrial technology assumptions.
It's more than time for Shostak et al to find some real jobs.
