Dream realized, then destroyed!

Years ago, there was a business that opened across route 66 from the canyon where I live.  I don't even remember what it was, but when it failed they painted over the business name on the huge sign over 66 and wrote "Dreams realized, then destroyed!"

Today I know exactly how they felt.  I don't feel like updating with news, but here is a copy of my post from NM LOWFI:

I am not sure what the problem is this year, but the fact is that we have sold way less tickets than last year.  While we don’t expect pre-sold tickets to cover the entire conference, we do expect a certain amount to be covered and that ain’t happening.  There is a pitiful amount of tickets (And vendor space) sold.  So if you were considering waiting until the “day of” to purchase your ticket – purchase now or there will be no conference.  Please know that if the conference still ends up being cancelled, you will be refunded by Nancy.  I really can’t understand with such great speakers why people aren’t buying tickets. :-(

Maybe you believe the media when they keep telling us the economy is recovering. But, just looking around and processing what I see, it's pretty obvious the economy is NOT recovering for a large number of people and, in fact, things are still slowly sliding downhill for some.

Our major local paper keeps proclaiming that our region is immune to the ongoing nationwide economic problems, yet every day I see more and more small office buildings emptying out (not less) and more retailers and restaurants going under.

Just as with UFOs, I now believe the US media are colluding to keep us from the truth of how bad things really are just below the surface for so many in this country.

Nevertheless, anger is bubbling up and expressing itself in escalating random gun violence where I live. We're having a record year for shootings in broad daylight in neighborhoods that aren't considered dangerous and at major local events and venues.

Those who have held onto jobs throughout the economic slide are all but blind to the plight of those who have been chronically unemployed or only sporadically employed since the economy crashed in 2008.

Planning to drive to the conference to save money? Well gas prices are on a trajectory to the moon once again so that's no longer an affordable option for getting there.

Meanwhile, food prices are rising daily thanks to the drought. Between yesterday and today milk went up $.15 a half gallon in the supermarket across our street. Let's see, attending a UFO conference or feeding the family? Which would you choose?

The conference has most likely been undone by the economic realities of the times we live in. Many people, even those who've been employed through it all, no longer have the discretionary income to spend on non-essentials or else they're hanging onto their spare pennies with a death grip as a hedge against an uncertain economic future that keeps threatening to be worse than the recent past and present.

In the economy of 2005, the conference might well have been a roaring success. I'm afraid those plush times are over, at least for the foreseeable future.

Hey, Lesley -

There are no doubt lots of reasons for the lack of response. One way or another, your personal interest in the success of the project is admirable. If you were not disappointed, you would not be the right type of person for the job in the first place. Best wishes.

Sorry to hear Lesley. Believe me, if I could make it I would, but I've had to take money out of savings to pay for some unexpected but necessary expenses. Can't wait for Summer to be over.
Hang in there Lesley.
