This sounds exactly like an urban legend ("I learned of a fellow" or "I knew someone who knew someone").
The story's protagonist is long dead, there's little verifiable information on him other than a name and a high school, and the event happened almost 30 years ago. Doesn't that make you go ---- hmmmmmm? It should.
Ufology is chock full of these tall tales that have no basis in fact.
