Many of the numerous little islands off the west coast of Scotland show signs of ancient habitation. Evidence points to farming on a basic level and extensive forestation. If you go there now, they are deserted, windswept, barren places with no trees and no animals barring seabirds and seals. Something happened, because people don't give up land and leave by sea unless they have good reason...
