Again - Hotlinking is Stealing!

I don't want to give the url (why give them any hits?), but a certain site is hotlinking the entire UFO Magazine forum.  They are mentioned below so you can google them if you wish.  You can read about the questionable nature of these people at the forum, in this post.  They do not even post anywhere to contact them by email on their website, not that I can't figure out why.  So I left a message on the facebook fan page, simply saying "please stop hotlinking the UFO Mag forum."  It was removed and then I noticed this post on the website:

The Intelligence community, the Government and some other web sites have threatened us and told us to take some of the information on this sight down. We not only refuse but believe that the interchange of free ideas is crucial and protected by the Constitution of the United States of America. We will continue to bring you the latest in UFO / Alien news as well as update our extensive video library.

Sincerely,
the Staff at Northwest UFO Chasers

Yes, as if there is anything on their site that can't be found elsewhere on the internet -- totally for free.  Sorry, but I just do not see stealing from other sites as any great service to anyone, except maybe themselves to help attract people to their site.  I see not one original thing on the entire site, but they do want you to buy UFO products at their UFO store (maybe that is the original thing?).  So they use other people's content to try to attract people to their site to buy their products.  Nothing new there, every huckster on the internet has already tried or is doing that.

Obviously, if they really only cared about people reading our forum they would have an RSS feed that linked to our site.

I agree Leslie. I have the same problem over at my site where I pay journalist to cover tech news and then its lifted and stolen by other crappy sites, without credit much of the time :/

Their response is totally anal, at least credit the site you lifted the information from if you refuse to stop doing it, its only fair!

I hate that too. There used to be a person that would steal article from paranormal sites and put them on his site, without any credit, so it totally looked like he wrote them.

The thing that really bothers me about this is that people that don't know any better might think the hotlinking site is somehow affiliated with UFO Mag. Then they might by products from that site and blame UFO Mag if the transaction goes badly.

This type of activity is both fraud and plagerism. Any blogger who engages in it is not only unethical but, if the blogger stolen from copyrighted (is that a word?) original material hotlinked without accreditation, also subject to legal action and financial consequences.

I even emailed the site host and told them that UFO Magazine is a registered trademark and it is unlawful for this site to be using it, no reply yet and the site is still up.

By the way, I do actually know the difference between buy and by. :-)
