Some of you that follow me on facebook may know that my next door neighbor's house burnt down a couple weeks back.
There were a few portions left that were not made of wood - his bedroom and a couple storage areas. A couple nights after the fire, robbers showed up and took many obvious things. He stopped by the following day and called the police. A few days later, they came back and stole the tires off his van (using his own tools) and other stuff. He called the police. That time he was pissed off and decided to stay there and try to catch the robbers instead of staying at his relative's house in town.
After sitting up all night for several nights he had pretty much given up. He let himself fall asleep in his old bedroon, which was not burnt down and the bed was still in tact. Once the sun rose and around 7am he was awoken by two teenagers - he freaked and fell out of the bed and they were so frightened that they ran away with one of them leaving a jacket behind.
As most of us would do, he called the police, they came out and he explained to them what had happened. They accused him of lying and told him if he ever bothered them again they would report him for staying in a house that was unsafe. They wouldn't even take the jacket as evidence!
When I came home from some grocery shopping last evening I saw a white van in front of his gate and that there had been a sign posted there. After the van was gone I checked the sign, it basically said that house is a nuisance and nobody is allowed to live in it. Certainly nobody in this neighborhood reported the house as being a nuisance, but the cops obviously did. Not only do they put his house in danger by broadcasting that nobody can live there, but also this entire neighborhood. In what way do police care about public safety? Abandoned houses are targets for crack users and who knows what else!
Aside for that, if you own land why should anyone be able to tell you how you can live on it? I knew the man who built that house, there were never any plans or approval by the state and yet nobody bothered him for the years he lived there. Is it only if you suggest the police should do their job that you get bothered? Well, and why can't you live however you wish on your own land?
It really pisses me off!
