Folklore and Religion

Easter is a really slow news day. Slow for blog posts too. Apparently people other than myself do Easter things on Easter. Back when my grandmother was alive and well my family had a big Easter celebration, almost as big as Christmas, but that hasn't gone on since the very early 80s. It was totally my grandmother's doing, so once she wasn't doing it the rest of us just let it go.

My grandmother also believed that bad things happened around Easter time. In her mind this was to remind you of the suffering of Christ. With the death of my sister last week I was reminded of her belief or curse, whichever you prefer. I do often have bad things happen around Easter, though not every year or probably even most years. However, it is more likely that I take note of them at that time because of things she said rather then there are actually more bad things that happen around that time.

Amazing how stories like that stick with you for your entire life. I am not complaining about it, it is that kind of folklore mixed with religion that I remember of my grandmother that I totally cherish, although I may not believe it. It wasn't always mixed with religion either. I can remember her turning around and driving the long way because a black cat passed in front of the car. She would also totally freak out if someone walked under a ladder or broke a mirror. She knocked on wood and threw salt over her shoulder. Maybe that is why I am so weird? I grew up in the same house with her. :-)

Some new posts if you have missed them at Land of Enchantment, The Wild Kingdom and Lesley Land. Mostly photos.
